10 80s Slasher Movies You May Not Have Seen
9. Visiting Hours (1982)
This Canadian slasher follows an ambitious reporter who finds herself targeted by a masochistic, misogynistic psycho. Surviving his brutal attack, she is admitted to hospital where he seeks her out and continues to torment her.
Once again we have 20th Century Fox sparing no expense and bringing us this beautifully made, surprisingly dark slow-burn slasher. Much like the previous year's Halloween II, Visiting Hours takes full advantage of its hospital setting with long dark corridors a-plenty. There is a permanent feeling of dread and discomfort as we're not quite sure if the threat is just around the corner.
Visiting Hours stands out from the crowd with its casting choices. Lee Grant was a woman in her fifties at the time of filming, but she bites into the role of Deborah Ballin with vigor and puts up a valiant final girl fight.
The legendary Michael Ironside is truly chilling here as our antagonist Colt Hawker as well, and glimpses into his past offer clues as to why he became this homicidal woman hater. It is surprisingly deep script writing and character development for an otherwise simple slasher movie and adds undeniable sympathy to an otherwise unlikable man.
If you want a slasher with subtle feminist message and endless cat and mouse antics, Visiting Hours is definitely worth checking out.
