10 '90s Horror Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen

2. Lord Of Illusions

We are all familiar with Clive Barker's work one way or another, whether in print or on screen; whether through the hive of Cabrini-Green or the inter-dimensional doors to the Cenobites' lair. However, while Barker has written the material many films have been based on, or written the films directly, his directing credits are few and far between.

Horror fans may be forgiven, then, for overlooking one of his lesser works: Lord of Illusions. Arriving the same year as Candyman sequel Farewell to the Flesh, it had Barker heavily involved from beginning to end, writing the original short story, writing the screenplay, producing, and directing -- all to no avail.

Lord of Illusions follows private detective Harry D'Amour (Scott Bakula) who meets the mysterious stage performer Philip Swann (Kevin J O'Connor), whose illusions ensnare the flatfoot in a world of mystery and horror revolving around the resurrection of a dark sorcerer. The film's tone is an uneasy balance between horror and supernatural fantasy that frequently feels like a particularly hardcore episode of Angel. But, although this balance is never mastered, the film still deserves to be seen -- especially by fans of Hellraiser and Barker's work in general.
