9. Garrett Hedlund - The Tutor & The Marsh King’s Daughter
Though not a household name, Garrett Hedlund has appeared in several high-profile films since his big screen debut in 2004's Troy.
Eragon, Tron: Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davis, Unbroken, the list goes on. So, was 2023 the year Hedlund finally broke through as a leading man?
In a word, no.
The actor/country musician was front and centre in psychological thriller The Tutor, playing the titular role. When confronted with a particularly disturbed student (played by Stranger Things' Noah Schnapp), Hedlund's character Ethan must fight to stay safe and keep his own dark secrets hidden.
One of Ethan's secrets is that he's involved in a very bad movie.
The Tutor was full of plot holes and head-scratching moments, as both Hedlund and Schnapp failed to provide the gravitas needed for such emotionally involved characters.
Later in the year, Hedlund was also involved in The Marsh King's Daughter, another thriller starring Daisy Ridley.
Despite swapping Will Byers out for Rey Palpatine (or was it Skywalker?), this film fared little better, leaving Hedlund with a pair of duds to round out his 2023.
