10 More Most Confusing Movie Moments Nobody Understands

2. Inversion - Tenet

Christopher Nolan has a history of producing ambiguous projects, from Memento and Interstellar to Inception. Even the ending to his acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy left the fate of Bruce Wayne open to interpretation. Tenet however, feels on another level entirely even from the most confusing of the rest of Nolan's back catalogue.

It's the kind of film that isn't necessarily supposed to make sense on first viewing, but even after seeing John David Washington and Robert Pattinson fight backwards several times, the concept of inversion remains a frustrating mystery.

Tenet became infamous when it released in 2020, widely being regarded as one of the most confusing movies ever. Vague explanations were offered throughout, but the kind that didn't exactly help. When the protagonist is told outright not to try and understand things, it doesn't give much hope that anyone watching will have a chance.

It does feel that this is intentional rather than an oversight from the acclaimed writer and director, as audiences are all but told that the concept of inversion isn't supposed to be understood, but this arguably makes it a much bigger risk to deliberately base a story around something no one will understand.
