10 More Most Confusing Movie Moments Nobody Understands
1. Financial Jargon - The Big Short
The Big Short tells the story of how the American financial crisis in 2007 was caused by the downfall of the housing market, and how nobody saw it coming except for a handful of people. Outside the likes of Michael Burry (Christian Bale), Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), and Mark Baum (Steve Carell), there were few people who understood the principles behind why the housing market was going to fall.
By the very definition of the narrative, there was a lot of exposition needed for the aspects of the financial and mortgage worlds that the typical layman in the cinema just wouldn't understand.
The movie was self-aware enough that the technical jargon would go over the heads of most and addressed it wonderfully. Not only was it referenced by Ryan Gosling's Jared in a voiceover, but he also introduced Margot Robbie sipping champagne in a bubble bath to explain everything before telling the audience to f*ck off.
As entertaining as this deviation from the story was, however, even after Robbie's explanation it was still very difficult to follow without a deeper knowledge of the housing market and mortgage rates. There were similar scenes in which aspects of the financial world were explained by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, economist Richard Thaler, and Selena Gomez, but again, things still weren't much clearer.
