10 Abandoned Franchises That Deserved Another Movie
7. National Treasure
While a third installment in the National Treasure franchise was recently announced to be in development, don't hold your breath over it, because we've heard that story countless times since Book of Secrets was first released thirteen years ago.
Instead, it appears as though the future for the series lies on the small screen following the announcement last week that a National Treasure show was in the works for Disney Plus that would follow the same concept of the movies but feature an all-new and younger cast of characters.
That's all well and good, but the studio seem to be forgetting that a huge part of the franchise's appeal is entirely down to Nicolas Cage, and the enjoyment that fans derive from seeing him go on far-fetched adventures full of illogical plot contrivances and subliminal history lessons.
The first installment and the sequel have combined to earn over $800m at the box office, which are solid numbers for movies that cost at least $100m apiece, but they aren't exactly Disney numbers. The Mouse House seem content to rely on properties that will bring in the maximum amount of profit, and unfortunately National Treasure doesn't fit that remit.
