The Previous Movie: The absurdly homo-erotic, riotously entertaining Tony Scott-directed action movie about two naval aviators training to become fighter pilots, starring Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer.
Why It Was Abandoned: Back at the end of 2010, the idea of a Top Gun sequel first made itself properly known, with Tom Cruise's Maverick playing a mentor character to a new, younger character. Tony Scott was on-board as long as it wasn't a remake, and in fact met with Cruise in August 2012 to scout locations while the script was finished off. Two days later, Scott's suicide put the film's future in doubt, though all parties apparently remain interested in bringing Scott's vision to the big screen. Still, if it hasn't happened after 27 years, does it really seem that likely? With Cruise's full schedule for the foreseeable future and producer Jerry Bruckheimer taking a hit on The Lone Ranger as well as having Pirates of the Caribbean sequels coming out of his ears, don't count on this one, even if it would be hella cool.
