10 Abandoned Movie Sets You Can Visit In Real Life
9. Henry River Mill Village, North Carolina - The Hunger Games
The first true ghost town on this list, Henry River Mill village was once a planned self-contained neighbourhood built to capitalise on the cotton industry. A century later, though, this textile-hub has been long abandoned after the jobs and industry moved away from the village.
Some buildings have been lost to time (the mill at the centre of the village was struck by lightning and consequently burned to the ground), but the area eventually came back to the fore thanks to the film industry.
This abandoned, degraded site was thus the perfect place to stand in for District Twelve for the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy. For a small fee, fans can tour the village and learn its history, as well as participate in reenactments from the most memorable scenes of the films.
Whilst many of the artefacts from the site have been transferred to a museum, many of the village's buildings still stand today. In 2017, residents local to the area purchased the land the village stands on in an effort to preserve the village's history, and provide daily tours of the village to visitors.
