10 Abandoned Scripts Better Than The Finished Movie

8. Child's Play Was More Of A Psychological Thriller

Until the remake, Don Mancini had been the brain behind every Child's Play film. He and Brad Douriff, the voice of the murderous doll, stuck through the franchise's darkest eras, went meta, managed to get positive responses to Direct-to-VOD releases and created a horror icon that has lasted three decades. Even his meta-phase is largely well-regarded amongst fans, having fun with its notoriety.

But Chucky wasn't always a corny, one-line delivery machine with a knife. Mancini initially envisioned the film as a psychological thriller, with one questioning the sanity of Chucky's new owner Andy. There's some of that in the produced film, but it's only the first act. The original script called for the Chucky reveal to only occur in the third. It was director Tom Holland, coming off the surprise success of Fright Night, who suggested the change.

What we got was great, but something more insidious certainly would have been interesting during the golden age of dime-a-dozen slashers.
