9. Planes - Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)
Aerophobia is known as the fear of flying, and is another common fear. This is seen as often being the culmination of numerous fears: the plane crashing, heights, claustrophobia, etc. Planes are like the Voltron of phobias, everyone's hooking up together to form the ultimate, super phobia. Of course, that doesn't exempt it from being absurd, sort of like the concept for Voltron. The reason for its inclusion?
The sheer statistical improbability of a plane crash, which is also the most common reason for the fear. The film which most notably plays up this fear is the fourth segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie, an anthology film featuring a remake of the classic Twilight Zone episode, Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, directed by George Miller. It's a story that's been told many times before; boy meets gremlin, gremlin meets boy, gremlin tries to orchestrate a plane crash. This film gets extra points for featuring a character that also suffers from the phobia in question. If you haven't seen any incarnation of this classic (The Simpsons parody included, which is even creepy in its own way), get to it!
