2. Speaking - Pontypool (2009)
The fear of speaking is known as
glossophobia. While its a more common fear, often related towards public speaking, the term also relates to a fear of speaking in general, regardless of context. A fear of public speaking naturally stems from social anxiety, which is an issue in its own way. The fear of speaking in general though, that's where we get into more absurd territory. Our entry for this phobia? A little Canadian horror film called Pontypool. Pontypool is a sorta-zombie movie taking place almost entirely within the confines of a radio station, relying mainly on brief bits of audio communication with the outside world to provide its scares. There appears to be something contagious going around though, causing people to enter violent rages, and, interestingly enough, it appears to be spread through verbal contact. Theres a large focus on the power of words, language and communication throughout the film, combined with the insinuation that speaking to someone could cause them to enter a homicidal rage. Now theres a reason to be afraid of speaking to strangers. This movie will make you think twice about that whole, "words sounding weird when they're repeated" thing.
