10 Acclaimed Movies Everybody Now Hates

6. Mother!

An example of films being entirely polarised reception wise depending on whether you're listening to critics or general audiences, mother! was once thought to be able to compete for some major awards following its acclamation during the 2017 festival season.

Festivals are where prestige films go to either thrive or die based on critical perception; this year's The Goldfinch made the mistake of premiering at a film festival where it would get pretty unfairly slated by critics.

But mother! had the opposite experience, where it received rave reviews following its premiere in Venice, competed for the Golden Lion award, and received a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. All of this indicated an exciting chance for arthouse cinema to garner wider praise later in the year, with some critics heralding it as a masterpiece, while others had less than favourable thoughts.

The intrigue in such differing opinions - while overall being seen in a positive light - allowed it to leave the festival circuit with critical acclaim.

When the film premiered to the public, it was clear which side most of them took, as the film scored an impressive F CinemaScore. Less than twenty films have this score to date.

So, while the film is acclaimed by many top critics for its unique nature, it's clear that the majority of the general audience absolutely loathe this film. Yikes.

Chances are I’m watching a movie or replaying Mass Effect rather than doing anything productive.
