7. The Blind Side

Crafted from the ground-up as an Oscar contender, The Blind Side is remembered unfavourably for its serious use of the white saviour trope. But back in 2009, the film was adored by many for the performance of Sandra Bullock which would go on to win her an Academy Award.

The Blind Side more gives off the illusion of being acclaimed while actually having its critics at the time. The film always had mixed reviews that leaned slightly more towards positive, but its place as a Best Picture nominee cements it in history as a worthy drama in the eyes of many.

In reality, its Best Picture nomination came as a surprise, and led to a changing of the rules as to how nominees were chosen.

For this year, it was required that the top ten voted for nominees would automatically take a nomination slot. Following The Blind Side's addition, the Academy rectified the rules to make it so a film had to meet a number of nominations determined by an algorithm instead.

So while the 2010 award season was dominated by this melodrama, the movie itself isn't remembered fondly at all, almost ten years later.

The discourse surrounding Bullock's Oscar win is also mixed, with many claiming it was a win manufactured by the film's marketing campaign rather than any reflection of talent.

Chances are I’m watching a movie or replaying Mass Effect rather than doing anything productive.
