10 Actors Who Didn't Realise They Were In Crap Films
2. Will Smith - After Earth
The only thing more annoying than someone who thinks they're the biggest thing ever is a parent who thinks their child is the next big thing. In what is the worst mash-up in the history of strained introductions, Will Smith is excruciatingly exemplar of both of these traits. Thinking he's the biggest movie star in the world because he starred Independence Day and Men In Black a decade and a half ago, the only thing more obnoxious than his inflated ego is the way he's pushing son Jaden into being a movie star in the absence of any discernible talent. The disastrous After Earth should hopefully put some of this to rest, although Smith is may be already too out of touch with reality - he actively wanted M. Night Shyamalan to direct the film - for it to have any effect. Originally a low-fi, modern set tale, the film became a sci-fi because that's the sort of crap that gets pulled if you bring Shyamalan on board, After Earth is the story of a boy who lives in the shadow of his father and must overcome fear. And not because fear is a bad thing, but because there's a monster out there who can literally smell fear. Wow, it's egotistical and dumb. The film's made worse by its publicity, with Smith flat-out praising the movie as a sci-fi great; his association with it blinded him to its failings.
