Drew Barrymore appeared in three horror movies as a child actress, 1980's Altered States, 1984's Firestarter, and 1985's Cat's Eye. Of course, she also had a memorable role in Scream. In the late 1990s, she formed her production company Flower Films.

Though Barrymore produced her own movies through the company - including cult classic Donnie Darko - in 2014 she executive produced two horror movies, Happy Camp, a found footage thriller, and Animal, a monster movie about hikers being killed by a hideous beast. Another executive producer on both films was Barrymore's Flower Films partner Nancy Juvonen, who married late night TV host Jimmy Fallon after meeting him on the set of Fever Pitch, which starred Barrymore and Fallon.

Though they seemed to be an attempt to recreate Flower Films' success with the low-budget Donnie Darko, neither Happy Camp or Animal was well-received by critics or audiences. Happy Camp was only released on VOD (it is unavailable on DVD), while Animal had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. along with a VOD release before airing on the Chiller U.S. television network and being released on DVD.

Unsurprisingly, Flower Films' next production is a romantic comedy, which suggests Barrymore's brief flirtation with horror movies is over.
