10 Actors That You Never Knew Produced Horror Movies
1. Mel Brooks - The Fly (1986)
Iconic comedian Mel Brooks not only created the quintessential horror comedy, 1974's Young Frankenstein, he practically wrote the book on producing movies on the sly. He formed Brooksfilms in the late 1970s to not only produce his own comedy movies but to also produce non-comedic films.
For example, though Brooks was an executive producer of the 1980 drama The Elephant Man he did not want audiences to think it was a comedy and credited the films to Brooksfilms rather than to Mel Brooks. He pulled the same trick with director David Cronenberg's 1986 sci-fi horror movie The Fly, a remake of the 1958 movie of the same title.
The Fly turned lead actor Jeff Goldblum into a star when it became a box office hit, grossing $60.6 million worldwide on a $9 million budget. It also won an Oscar for Best Makeup - an award that had been created in response to the groundbreaking makeup techniques used in Brooks' The Elephant Man, which did not win an award for its makeup because the category did not yet exist. Brooksfilms also produced the 1989 sequel The Fly II, which was less successful with critics and audiences.
