5. Sarah Wayne Callies - The Walking Dead

Love or hate her, Sarah Wayne Callies' character of Lori Grimes in The Walking Dead was one of the most important individuals in shaping the success of the opening few seasons of the franchise. The wife of Rick, lover of Shane and mother of Carl, she is one of the few survivors of the zombie apocalypse running rife across the show's world and follows the main group of fellow survivors around until the third season in the show.

Lori was a character hard to ever really love however. Prone to moments of absolute insanity, Sarah Wayne Callies is essentially forced to swing from one radical emotion to another in some of the show's worst moments of character storytelling and development.

However, Callies' portrayal of Lori was always amongst the best in the show. She completely sells the awkward love triangle between her character, Rick and Shane, and the moments between herself and Carl, particularly at the end, are some of the most raw and gut-wrenching in the entire franchise.

Whilst The Walking Dead is a show renowned for the fact that no one is safe, there's this sense whenever Sarah Wayne Callies talks about her departure from the show that Lori's demise was not something she was necessarily thrilled to hear about.

She was just about hitting her stride with Carl and Rick and Callies had spoken extensively about her hopes and plans for the character in the coming seasons before her death. Given the fact as well that her death in the show comes at a different point to the source material, it's clear to see why Callies protested against being taken out so suddenly.
