10 Actors Who Begged For Their Character NOT To Die
6. Joseph Pilato - Day Of The Dead
Day of the Dead was the third George Romero zombie movie shown to the world having been released in 1985 and, according to the main man himself, is arguably the most tragic of any entry into the franchise. Focusing on the downfalls of a lack of cohesion and communication, the film once again pits a group of human survivors up against an armada of the living dead.
In the film, humans are outnumbered by 400,000 to 1 against their zombie adversaries but have at least managed to retreat various fort-like underground shelters. Joseph Pilato's Captain Henry Rhodes acts as a leader to one of these shelters and, though he is slightly unhinged and quick to fly off the handle, establishes himself as being strong and capable throughout his time on screen.
However, when it came time for him to shoot his final death scene, Pilato had a slight change of heart for what he wanted his character to sign off with. According to Pilato, he sought out Romero on the final day of filming and asked for an explanation on his rationale behind Rhodes going out in the way he did, even going as far as to saying he would have preferred him to escape somehow.
The two men had a pretty frosty couple of exchanges throughout the whole day of filming and though Pilato's attitude eventually shifted somewhat, he still brings up every now and again his hopes that Captain Rhodes might have pulled through in another universe.
