Corrupt detective Eric Matthews popped up in the second film in the Saw franchise, making a hell of an entrance as he fought against time to outwit the Jigsaw killer.

It was hard to figure out if we liked him or not, due to his morally grey nature, but that fit in perfectly with the overall ethical ambiguity of the film series.

The cliff-hanger at the end of the second Saw film made viewers absolutely want to see what happened next to him and after the foot squashing hell he went through during Saw III, it seemed he died in the tunnels at the hands of Amanda Young.

Donnie Wahlberg, who played Matthews, even said in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes that he wanted Saw III to be the end of his character, stating that “I told them I wanted to die in part three and they took out my death.”

What we get is a cool death scene, sure, but you can really really tell Whallie was only in it for the paycheck.
