6. Sigourney Weaver - Alien 3

The alien franchise without Ellen Ripley is, as the Alien vs. Predator movies and subsequent prequels to Ridley Scott’s masterpiece show, just not Alien really.

Weaver knew how important Ripley was to the saga, and also knew it was better to keep her reputation in tact rather than ruin it with constant appearances.

It didn’t help that Ridley Scott dropped Alien 3 like an ugly xenomorph baby when he discovered an Alien vs. Predator movie was in the works. Weaver wanted nothing to do with that project, so she only accepted the part if it could be Ripley’s final outing.

In Weaver’s own words, “She deserves a rest.”

It is a brilliant death scene though, as Ripley gracefully falls backwards into the pit of magma to save herself and others from the xenomorph baby inside her.

Both Weaver and Ripley herself understood the power of self-sacrifice for the greater good, as it’s far better to go out in a blaze of glory than become a shadow of a once-great character. Still, a little cameo in the future might be nice…
