4. Melissa McCarthy - Ghostbusters

Perhaps the most famous example of this audience-blaming phenomenon, the fallout from 2016's Ghostbusters reboot was interesting, to say the least.

In fairness, the movie came under fire from internet trolls the second it was even announced, let alone released.

The main criticism was that the famous cast of Murray, Aykroyd and co. had been "replaced", for want of a better word, with an all-female cast including Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig as part of the titular team.

While the film itself was actually quite well received in certain quarters, citing an enjoyable premise, suitably entertaining performances from the lead actors, and a great supporting appearance from Chris Hemsworth; it nevertheless bombed on release.

Who is to blame for this failure, Melissa McCarthy?

Men in general, and old school male Ghostbusters fans to be more specific:

"...(it's) jarring that in this day and age... that someone, if you said, 'You ruined my childhood,' I remember that was a thing, which I thought, 'I'm pretty sure you've got a weird childhood. If a movie, 35 years later, is ruining your childhood, don't blame us, you've got your own issues,'"

"I just don’t know why people are so afraid of women."

Maybe they're just afraid of bad movies, Melissa...
