When the last movie in The Hobbit trilogy rolls out at the end of the year, Ian McKellen will have played the role of the wizard, Gandalf, a whopping six times. The first three times he played Gandalf, of course, he did so on practical sets, with a cast of companions he could look in the eyes and - you know - act with.

For the latter three, McKellen spent most of his time making the films in the company another companion entirely: the green screen. Now, green screens are a big part of movie-making these days, and McKellen, a professional of the highest order, knows that they're needed sometimes.

But that didn't stop the poor old silly billy from suddenly realising that, hey, what he was doing on the set of The Hobbit (that is, pretending to talk to other actors) wasn't really something he enjoyed doing. "This isn't what I got into acting for," he sobbed one day, unaware that his mic was on and everyone on set could hear him. Don't worry: we're sick of all this CGI sh*t, too, McKells.
