Dustin Hoffman isn't especially known for his directorial work, but he did helm a movie adaption of the acclaimed play Quartet, which starred Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly and Tom Courtenay in the leading roles.

In the movie, which tells the story of four elderly opera singers who get together for one last performance, Hoffman originally planned to have his acclaimed actors miming over recordings of professional opera singers. Hearing them sing, however, Hoffman opted to have the actors sing the track themselves (Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto, if you must know).

A lot of training and practice went into the process, of course, and one day - when Hoffman came to set - he was so moved by a particular performance that he broke down into genuine tears. Which is - as you'll probably agree - one of the most adorable things to have ever happened in the history of the world.
