Movie making used to be a whole lot different, in the sense that it was more acceptable for a director and his crew to disappear into some far corner of the world, and - together - go collectively insane. Not that anybody making Apocalypse Now wanted to do such a thing, of course: it just happened that way.

So somehow, during the shooting of the movie's now infamous and iconic opening scene, lead actor Martin Sheen got super drunk. Given that it was his birthday, his personal life was in turmoil, and he was making Apocalypse Now (the shooting of the movie was a well-known fiasco; Sheen eventually had a heart attack), Sheen's emotions got the better of him, and he broke down, sobbing, smashing things up (including a mirror), whilst director Francis Ford Coppola - also insane at this point - provoked him off-camera.

It's in the movie, of course, and it's absolutely glorious.
