It never hurts to hire actors with a passion for the source material, and Karl Urban clearly has a lot of love for comic book movies, having played Judge Dredd and more recently Skurge In Thor: Ragnarok.
Granted, neither character is similar to Batman on paper, although both are menacing in their own way. Dredd and Skurge's willing use of lethal force might fly in the face of the Caped Crusader's traditions, but then so did Batfleck's.
Urban's distinctive chin would look the part under the mantel of the Bat and recent roles have left him in the perfect shape to handle the physical demands of the role.
A question mark remains over his ability to make the aristocratic Bruce Wayne his own, but a star with as broad a CV as his can turn his hand to most things.
