Jake Gyllenhaal is the frontrunner to replace Ben Affleck as Batman, and the latest reports suggest Matt Reeves has his heart set on casting the Donnie Darko star in his upcoming solo movie.

It's easy to see why Reeves wants him. The War for the Planet of the Apes filmmaker intends to make a noir-themed Batman movie that emphasises the character's role as the DC Universe's greatest detective, and Gyllenhaal impressed playing investigative types in Zodiac, Prisoners and Nightcrawler.

Moreover, the characters he brought to life in these movies were intense, complex individuals, not a million miles away from Bruce Wayne and Batman in some respects.

Gyllenhaal has also proven that he can bulk up and take on action roles. He might not have been the right ethnicity for Prince of Persia, but the level of athleticism he displayed on screen was impressive nonetheless.

The 37-year-old is said to have been Christopher Nolan's second choice to play Batman in his Dark Knight trilogy, but it looks like he could go one better and land the role if Reeves does end up recasting Affleck's part.
