10 Actors Who Could Be The Breakout Stars Of 2018
9. Rosa Salazar
You Know Her From:
Supporting parts in mid-level young adult dystopian franchises Divergent and Maze Runner. She also had a recurring role as a nurse in the first season of patchy horror anthology show American Horror Story and appeared in a handful of episodes of the 2010 reboot of Parenthood.
In 2018
Salazar will probably get a slightly increased part as protagonist Thomas' love interest Brenda in the delayed final Maze Runner film, The Death Cure, on its release later this month.
It is her role as the eponymous warrior cyborg in long-awaited James Cameron passion project Alita: Battle Angel, though, that will likely make Salazar the centre of attention.
After over a decade of trying, Cameron (acting as producer and co-writer with director Robert Rodriguez) has finally got his adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's manga off the ground with a budget of almost $200 million and a cast full of Oscar winners: Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly and Mahershala Ali.
It's undoubtedly a big risk throwing all that money behind a project and a star with little name recognition, but it's hardly the first time that Cameron has put his name behind such a risk and it's always paid off for him in the past. He and Rodriguez both have a strong pedigree with creating vehicles for badass female action stars. Could Salazar be the next one?
If nothing else, her uncanny valley-esque performance capture appearance with big anime eyes will be a talking point, even if it's why the film fails!
