Just in case you missed it, Ryan Gosling announced last week that he intends to
take a break from acting. In his own words, I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does.Some of his audience seem to disagree, with a
Ryan Gosling hotline set up, providing various recordings from his movies to help ease fans through this difficult time. Gosling has two more movies scheduled for release this year, Only God Forgives, and an as yet untitled Terrence Malick project. He is currently focusing on his directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster, at this stage set to come out in 2014. After that, its uncertain when hell grace our screens again. Replacing Ryan Gosling wont be easy. Few actors have found the balance between indie darling and full blown Hollywood heart-throb that he has been able to achieve. Hes been in good movies, he looks great with and without a beard, and as we saw in Stupid Crazy Love, he scores OK in the
topless category. Not to mention hes a
feminist icon, the subject of an
alarming number of GIFs, and moonlights as a
street fight mediator. It seems there is nothing the man can't do. So is anybody out there capable of filling his shoes? Heres a list of ten actors we think might be up to the task.
1o. Andrew Garfield
The Case For: Andrew Garfield, everybodys favourite secret Englishman, is just hitting his stride in Hollywood. His role as Eduardo in The Social Network was nominated for a BAFTA and paved the way for him to star in the Spider-Man reboot. Need some grittier material? He was also in Never Let Me Go, the adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguros novel about organ donors. Garfield dresses sharply and he has more than enough charm to step up.
The Case Against: Theres something weird about Garfields hair. It just looks the same. ALL THE TIME. I don't know if it's sinister or not, but man it's weird. Also his secret Englishness can confuse people, and you know how Ryan Gosling shares his last name with a cute
baby goose? Andrew doesnt.
