One of the biggest trends in Hollywood right now is the legacy sequel, essentially exploiting nostalgia for what is usually little more than a cash grab on the part of the studio.

For the most part, these movies fall flat critically if not always commercially, but Top Gun: Maverick was different. It's easily one of the best legacy sequels ever, bringing back Tom Cruise's Maverick along with newbies like Miles Teller's Rooster and Glen Powell's Hangman.

In the case of the latter, Powell was originally very critical of the character. He auditioned for the role of Rooster at first, and was more than a little underwhelmed at the character he was offered instead. In an interview with GQ, the actor spoke of just how little regard he had for what would ultimately be his own role.

Phrases like "dick garnish" and "Navy Draco Malfoy" paint a certain picture of Powell's feelings, but questioning why Hangman even existed as a character at all is arguably the most damning of them all.

It wasn't until shooting was underway that he found how to make the character more likeable, which certainly wouldn't have been possible without the help of Maverick himself.
