If you're thinking that James Caan's role as Sonny Corleone wasn't cut from The Godfather, you'd of course be absolutely right, but Caan's role in the final edit of the movie was nevertheless a rude awakening for the actor.

At the premiere, Caan discovered that his part had been massively downsized during the editing process, estimating that around 45 minutes of Sonny's character work - including his reaction to his father Vito's (Marlon Brando) shooting - was cut out.

An incensed Caan decided to confront producer Robert Evans, reportedly shouting at him at the premiere, "Hey, you cut my whole f**kin' part out."

While Caan's frustration is understandable if the scenes were that good, the final runtime was already 177 minutes, so it may simply have been a utilitarian choice that some of Caan's material had to hit the cutting room floor.

It certainly didn't do the Best Picture Oscar-winning masterpiece any harm, nor Caan who received a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work.
