10 Actors Who Didn't Understand Their Own Movie

6. Bob Hoskins - Super Mario Bros.

There's a good reason Super Mario Bros. is often considered one of the worst films ever made; the script was awful, the effects were terrible, and the actors clearly had no idea what was going on. Chief among them, Bob Hoskins, an English theater actor with so many awards, he probably had to buy an additional mantle to put them on.

There was a cultural difference between the British actor, Hollywood, and video games that simply didn't translate well to film, and Hoskins spoke about it several times over the years. In an interview with The Guardian, he had this to say:

"The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Bros. It was a [freaking] nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks, their own agent told them to get off the set!"

It wasn't all Hoskins' fault either; the film was just awful. It had a terrible script, inept directors, and it had little to nothing to do with the IP it was based upon. Hoskins may not have understood it all that much, but neither did anyone else who starred in it, or watched the movie.
