10 Actors Who Didn't Understand Their Own Movie

7. Christopher Plummer - The Sound Of Music

The Happening Mark Wahlberg
Twentieth Century-Fox

Christopher Plummer has been in a ton of films since he started acting in 1953, but the one that really landed him on the map was his performance as Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music. The movie was a massive hit, having dethroned Gone With the Wind as the highest-grossing film of all time, but Plummer would prefer his fans remember him for a different role.

Plummer was bored with his character, and he didn't enjoy working on the film. He definitely put in an effort, and it shows in the final cut, but it's interesting to wonder how his performance may have differed had he liked and understood Captain Georg von Trapp a little better.

He's spoken out about it several times over the years:

"Although we worked hard enough to make him interesting, it was a bit like flogging a dead horse. And the subject matter is not mine. I mean, it can't appeal to every person in the world. But it was a very well-made movie, and it's a family movie, and we haven't seen a family movie, I don't think, on that scale for ages."

Despite his opinion on the film and its subject matter, Plummer will always be known for his role in the final product, even if he would prefer people remembered him for something else.
