10 Actors Who Gave The Best Performance Of Their Careers In 2020
7. Sacha Baron Cohen - The Trial of the Chicago 7
Sacha Baron Cohen has had quite a year. The return of his Kazakh journalist, Borat Sagidyev, to our screens after a fourteen-year absence was a welcome one and let us all laugh at Rudy Giuliani even more as he was almost quite literally caught with his trousers down.
But Cohen hasn’t just been pranking politicians all year. He’s also been starring in one of the greatest court room dramas produced since A Few Good Men. And, appropriately, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is written and directed by A Few Good Men’s screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.
Sacha Baron Cohen plays Abbie Hoffman, a real-life protestor who was arrested and put on trial with seven others for allegedly attempting to cause violence at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Cohen deftly weaves his way through Sorkin’s often complex dialogue to deliver a spellbinding performance that is equal parts hilarious and tragic.
Cohen proves that he’s not just a clown by showing the deep pain and anger that underlines everything Hoffman did. Let’s hope that we see him in more dramatic roles in the future.
