8. Chadwick Boseman - Da 5 Bloods
Hearts around the world broke earlier this year when we lost Chadwick Boseman to colon cancer. He was not only a fantastic actor, best known for his performance as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he was also a man renowned for his kindness and generosity.
His final performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, due for a Netflix release on December 18, is said by critics to be magnificent. But Chadwick already knocked it out of the park earlier this year in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods.
The movie follows a group of ageing Vietnam War veterans who return to the country to dig up a stash of gold bars that they buried decades ago. Boseman’s character was killed back in the war, only ever being shown in flashback sequences, and yet his commanding performance as the squad commander ensures that he looms large over the film.
Boseman switches between terrifying and reassuring at the drop of a hat, surely a must for any actor in the running to be considered one of the greatest ever.
So do the right thing, Academy, and give Chadwick Boseman his Oscar.
