10 Actors Who Gave Their WORST Performance In Great Movies

8. Jessica Chastain—Crimson Peak

Our apologies to Pan’s Labyrinth helmer/ Hellboy saviour Guillermo del Toro for the second appearance of his oeuvre on this list—if it’s any consolation Mr. del Toro, we did say they were both great movies. And Crimson Peak indeed is, a visually sumptuous and appropriately campy homage to gothic horrors which combines tragedy, romance, and some classic scares to create a wholly original genre hybrid.

So, where’s the weak link? Tom Hiddleston puts in a typically strong turn as the story’s villain (or maybe possibly somehow sort of redeemable eventual antihero), and as the embattled ingenue protagonist Mia Wasikowska offers a beguiling portrait of innocence lost. Even Sons of Anarchy star/ man who would be Christian Grey Charlie Hunnam is fine in a minor role, so all is alright—right?

Er, almost. You see, there’s still the issue of Jessica Chastain’s villainous, incestuous Lucille Sharpe, and the Molly’s Game drags the action down with a cringe-inducing performance which starts north of hammy and ends up somewhere closer to unintentionally hilarious. It’s one thing to add some cheesy flair to a baddie, but Chastain positively tears through the scenery until there’s nowhere for her co-stars to look, and the film struggles to work around this over-egged performance.
