10 Actors Who Get More Hate Than They Deserve

7. Seth MacFarlane

seth-macfarlane-snl600 Whilst not primarily an actor, Seth MacFarlane (a.k.a. "that Family Guy guy") pops up in minor roles in films from time to time, regularly voice-acts in a variety of TV shows and films, and will reportedly fill the lead role in his upcoming sophomore feature: A Million Ways to Die in the West. Perhaps it's a testament to how unlikeable the man is that he can summon such a huge degree of negativity from a career largely behind the camera. Or, perhaps, we should examine this more closely. Firstly, Seth MacFarlane is a supremely talented man who's earned his career legitimately. He studied animation at college, made a short film, got a low-level job at Hannah Barbera off the strength of it, and worked his way up from there. There are no obvious lucky breaks or favours, here - just hard work. Secondly, he's behind a lot of quality products. Family Guy may not be the show that it once was, but the first few seasons were smart and - while not original in premise - were extremely original in tone. More importantly, though, they were actually funny. Hilarious, in fact. Yes, the writing can be frustratingly lazy, but the show has one of the best laugh-to-gag ratios that I've ever seen on TV. You can enjoy it in the same way that one might enjoy a quality sketch show. Plus, despite the baffling misconception that Seth writes and animates every single episode himself, he actually has a huge team of writers under him that actually do the writing. Seth hasn't written an episode of the show since the pilot way back in 1999. If you're sick of jokes making fun of your faith or Conway Twiggy cutaways that last ten times longer than they have any right to, then take it up with the actual writing staff. More importantly, though, this list is about him as an actor. Seth is primarily a voice actor and, to give him his dues, he's phenomenally talented at it. He's up there with the very best of his field. Peter Griffin, Brian Giffin, Stewie Griffin, Stan Smith and Roger the Alien are all hugely distinctive vocally - and he gets a lot of genuinely wonderful performance into those characters.
