Though it might seem strange to imagine now, prior to winning the role of Superman in Man of Steel, Henry Cavill was actually a pretty regular-looking - though still dashingly handsome - guy.

The 2011 epic fantasy film Immortals required Cavill to have a wiry, lean physique at just 170 pounds, which was basically the exact opposite build that Zack Snyder envisioned for his interpretation of Superman.

As a result, Cavill worked with famous personal trainer Mark Twight - who previously trained the cast of Synder's 300 - in order to undergo Olympic-standard weight training while consuming up to 6,000 calories per day.

Over the course of five months, Cavill gained 20 pounds of weight and his total body fat dropped to a staggering 3%. The results speak for themselves, though: Cavill's shirtless physique during the oil rig sequence is jaw-dropping, while presenting a stockier Superman than audiences had ever seen before.

Man of Steel? Damn straight.
