4. Simon Pegg Dismisses Marvel Films As Uninspired Fodder For Mental Infants

What He Said

"Now we’re essentially all consuming very childish things – comic books, superheroes. Adults are watching this stuff, and taking it seriously! It is a kind of dumbing down in a way because it’s taking our focus away from real-world issues.

Films used to be about challenging, emotional journeys or moral questions that might make you walk away and re-evaluate how you felt about... whatever. Now we’re walking out of the cinema really not thinking about anything, other than the fact that the Hulk had a fight with a robot.”

Why He Said it

Simon Pegg is no stranger to the action, sci-fi genre, having played important roles in the Mission Impossible movies and Star Trek. And yet, he does not seem to be much of a fan of the superhero equivalent of those movies.

It is difficult not to view Pegg's opinions as hypocritical, considering his own history of starring in SciFi, action and comedy movies, all of which are considered low-brow fare by movie critics. Interestingly, Pegg shared his views shortly after Marvel removed him and director Edgar Wright from the production of Ant-Man.

So there is a more than a probable chance that there was an element of sour grapes in Pegg's assertion that watching superhero movies means you forget about real-world issues like global warming. Because apparently, audiences are incapable of dwelling on two different, unrelated subjects like superheroes and world hunger at the same time.
