What He Said

"And in the actual scene, my hair was different, my… [Sigh] I was like, ‘This is torture, man. I don’t want to do this.’ My agent said: ‘You have to, it’s part of the deal.’ I’m actually falling down from a spaceship, so they had to put me in harness in this green-screen studio. And in between takes I was stuck there, fake hair stuck on to my head with glue, this !*$% helmet, while they reset. And I’m thinking: ‘24 hours ago, I was Mandela.’ … Then there I was, in this stupid harness, with this wig and this sword and these contact lenses. It ripped my heart out."

Why He Said it

There are few actors who are more suited to the role of a superhero than Idris Elba. Instead, he found himself protraying Heimdall in the Thor franchise. Armed with nothing but a giant sword and a frankly ridiculous helmet, Elba managed to bring his trademark sense of gravitas to a role that basically requires nothing more than gazing deeply into the distance and occasionally warning others of some great danger yet to come.

It may have been an easy payday for Elba, but far from an artistically satisfying one. He shot for Thor: The Dark World very soon after shooting Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, where he played the world-renowned civics rights leader, and could not help but compare the two experiences, to the former's disadvantage.
