10 Actors Who Learned To Play Instruments For Their Roles

1. Samuel Jackson In Black Snake Moan

Finally, we come to another venerable actor with a ton of different experiences under his belt. Samuel L. Jackson embraced his inner blues artist with Black Snake Moan in 2006. It was a far more serious affair than many of his previous releases.

The final product is really a production of two parts; on the one hand, we have protagonist Lazarus Redd performing and winning over the crowd and on the other we have the man assisting Christina Ricci's Rae Doole in a bid to to cure her of her nymphomania. Redd is rugged and beaten down, his wife having left him, and Jackson's performance in the Blues clubs is laced with a soulful impact.

For at least six or seven hours a day over seven months and often during the production of Snakes on a Plane, Jackson learned the guitar and put it towards playing in the film itself. The actor said he loved playing the role, feeling it was more complex than others he had played and was somewhat relatable to his own family.

As opposed to the cursing we usually expect him to wield, Samuel's performance in Black Snake Down was by far the best aspect of the film, his performance best summarised by the performance of "Stackolee" among other tracks.
