He's been in indie romances, modern horror classic, Oscar-winning crime thrillers, sci-fi spectacles and visceral dramas, and despite his prolific stature he's always the best thing about his own movies.

An endearing everyman in most of his films, Hawke works so well because he's relatable and so well versed at playing characters who are both good and out of their depth. Think Training Day, the Before trilogy, Boyhood, even Sinister, Daybreakers and The Purge.

It's hard to watch Ethan Hawke without becoming transfixed by what he's bringing to the table. He can play vulnerable, personal and romantic with ease, but he can switch it up and become an action star with a click of his fingers.
