The Role: Denis Lawson, who played legendary starfighter pilot Wedge Antilles in the original trilogy, was invited to reprise his role for Episode VII, though turned the offer down, stating that "they asked but it just would have bored ". Why They Regret Turning It Down: It's hard to imagine that Lawson's making the big bucks on indie sci-fi flicks and TV show New Tricks that he would by appearing in Star Wars, especially as he would likely be written into all three of the new movies. It's possible that Lawson felt that Episode VII would just be another soulless green screen calamity as per Lucas' prequel trilogy (hence the "bored" comment), though it's clear from the trailers that this isn't the case at all. Would It Have Worked?: Of course. Seeing an older Wedge help out during dogfights would make the film feel more consistent with what came before while not feeling especially hamfisted or forced for the sake of nostalgia. What do you think of these original casting plans? Would they have worked? Or were the right decisions made? Shout them out in the comments!
