10 Actors Who Must Regret Turning Down 2015’s Biggest Movies
5. Gary Oldman - Spectre
The Role: Franz Oberhauser aka Blofeld, the mysterious villain hectoring James Bond in his latest outing, as ultimately played so memorably by Christoph Waltz. Oldman was offered the part first, however, but turned it down because he wasn't willing to commit to six months of filming all over the world. Why They Regret Turning It Down: For starters, Oberhauser barely ended up being in the final movie: his role is only about 20 minutes in length and surely wouldn't have taken up anywhere close to six months of Oldman's time. Plus, how often do you get an offer to work on something as iconic and prolific as the Bond franchise? It's tough to imagine anything else Oldman's been working on living up to the stature of Bond, even if Spectre was ultimately a fairly middling Bond flick. Even so, these offers rarely come around twice. Would It Have Worked?: Yes, but with some qualifications. Oldman is fantastic at playing the hammy villain, but isn't Waltz just so much better-suited to this slimy part? It's hard to imagine Oldman pulling it off with the same grace, even if his portrayal would have been a sight to see by itself, and he would've brought his own unique energy to it.
