7. Gerard Butler

Trying to branch out into the wrong genres was Gerard Butler's biggest misstep since his thunderous performance as 300's King Leonidas fired him into the mainstream.

With a slick leading role in Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla two years later, he almost dispelled the stereotype that action stars cannot actually act, but an ill-fated foray into romantic comedy followed, for some inexplicable reason.

Films like The Ugly Truth and The Bounty Hunter were drippy and generic even by rom-com standards, and Butler's career trajectory ever since feels like an attempt to claw back the action star cred he earned during the 300 era.

The similarly-themed Gods of Egypt attracted middling reviews and Butler's decision to revisit the role of Mike Banning for a third outing after London Has Fallen's lukewarm reception is also questionable.

Butler should steer clear of subject matter he's ill suited to and stick to his guns in the action category for a while, focus on making better movies within this genre before tackling something with more substance. There's no reason for his career to become one-note, but action-driven fodder should remain his bread and butter.
