10 Actors Who Publicly Hated Their Own Films

5. Bob Hoskins - Super Mario Brothers

The late, great Bob Hoskins had a mixed bag of a career, the actor landing as many below-par movies as he did good ones. If you head down to the cinema this week you might catch him in a reissue of one of his best, The Long Good Friday, but a Hoskins film that won't be receiving the re-release treatment any time soon (not outside of ironic hipster screenings, anyway) is Rocky Morton and Annabel Jarkel's Super Mario Brothers. Made by a pair whose names alone inspire suspicion, Super Mario Brothers was one of the first major game-to-movie adaptations, and is often cited as an example of why there aren't more of those. A huge disappointment, the film has been regarded as one of the worst movies ever made by many, including Bob Hoskins. Hoskins, who plays Mario in the film, told The Guardian in a 2011 Q&A that Super Mario Brothers was the worst job he'd ever done, period, as well as his biggest professional disappointment. When asked, "If you could edit your past, what would you change?", by the interviewer, Hoskins again returned to the film, replying, "I wouldn't do Super Mario Brothers".
