Despite being a lackluster film in terms of box office performance and what DC Comics and Warner Bros. were hoping for, Suicide Squad had a number of good things going for it. One of the biggest assets the film had in its toolbox was Margot Robbie, who gave an outstanding performance as Harley Quinn.

In the film, there's a single scene where she and the Joker are in a car crash, which results in the psychotic former therapist winding up submerged in water. In the scene, which doesn't take up more than a minute or two of screentime, Robbie had to perform underwater.

This is always dangerous, but there are safety measures put in place, including scuba divers who are just off-camera with air supplies ready and waiting. Despite this, Robbie prepared for the role by learning to hold her breath for five minutes!

That's an impressive feat for anyone, and it was also completely unnecessary. There are a number of ways the camera could have shot that scene, which wouldn't have required an unnatural length of time for her to hold her breath, but she insisted. She even had a running challenge with her stunt double, Ingrid Klenig, to see who could hold their breath the longest. When Klenig managed 5:30 underwater, Robbie set out to beat the record, but the director told her to stop, and that is wasn't necessary.
