Enough has been written about Robert De Niro's descent into mediocrity over the last couple of decades that there's not much point in going into it again here. However, unlike his contemporary Al Pacino, who seems to be coasting through just about everything, De Niro is still capable of great work under the right circumstances.

Of course, his reputation as one of the greatest actors in history was secured a long time ago but when Bobby steps away from the banal attempts at 'comedy' and puts some effort in, the results are solid. Silver Linings Playbook landed De Niro his first Academy Award nomination in 21 years in 2013, while he has also delivered strong performances in the likes of The Intern, American Hustle, Joy and Being Flynn.

Perhaps he just needs to learn to say 'no' to some of the material that comes his way. Since 2010, De Niro has appeared in 25 movies, with just five having a 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Compare that to the first 25 movies of his career; a list that includes Mean Streets, The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and The King of Comedy.

Being more selective with his choice of roles could yet see the 73 year-old enjoy a late career resurgence.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
