Try and think of the last good film you saw Vince Vaughn in and you'll probably end up saying something like, True... Detective? You'll remember, of course, that that wasn't even a film, and that the season Vaughn appeared in was so downright terrible that they haven't made another series since. The answer you're looking for is Into the Wild, which is ridiculous because that was made in 2007, ten years ago.

So Vince Vaughn has been offering up movie-goers pretty terrible films for a long time now, though against the odds he has managed to find some dignity in 2017 with two projects: Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson's conscientious objector war flick, and Brawl in Cell Block 99, a rollocking B-movie in the best possible way.

Vaughn is uncharacteristically great in both movies, but he's especially good in Brawl in Cell Block 99, which sees the comic actor switching out his funny chops to play a wronged criminal hellbent on revenge. It's a freewheeling grindhouse flick, but it's Vaughn who keeps the drama grounded, exposing a new dimension of his talent.

This turn, in fact, is the best serious performance he's ever done - and you wouldn't even be wrong to suggest it's his best performance ever. Now to keep the good films coming, Vince. What's that? You're working on a drama/comedy about wrestling, written and directed by Stephen Merchant, you say? Nailed it!
