10 Actors Who Refused To Use Body Doubles
4. Ryan Gosling - La La Land
Shifting gears slightly from embracing bust-ups to caressing some delicate keys, here's that time Ryan Gosling took his homework up a notch in order to authentically lace some sweet, sweet jazz into La La Land.
The role of Sebastian Waller, a passionate jazz pianist, was always going to live or die on the strength of the scenes depicting the character doing his thing on a piano. So, in order to give themselves a strong fallback should Gosling not be up to the tall task of convincingly tinkling the ivories on the day, Damien Chazelle would later reveal that a hand double was on set to step in as and when needed.
However, with Gosling thoroughly thrashing out some key practise in his spare time, three months worth of relentless learning to be precise, the director would also note that said stand-in wasn't ever actually required in the end.
Catching everyone on set very much off guard by the sheer level of skill he'd managed to achieve in such a short span of time, Chazelle was able to get up close and personal with the actor for these captivating extended instrumental scenes and add another exquisite layer to his masterful musical.
