For a long time, Cuba Gooding Jr. lounged around in obscurity before a big time return to relevance thanks to American Crime Story and his performance as OJ Simpson. His own arrest - for alleged sexual misconduct - adds a twist in that particular supposed redemption story, but we're here to talk about what happened in the wake of his biggest win.

Gooding Jr is exceptional and compelling in 1996's Jerry Maguire, turning the flashes of greatness he'd shown earlier in his career into a magic, award-worthy performance. He then followed it up pretty well with As Good As It Gets and What Dreams May Come, but then the wheels came off and for the better part of two decades - because he kept getting work - he floated from weird roles like Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story to dross like Norbit and Boat Trip.

Not every role can be Oscar-worthy, but choosing your own career demise through misguided job acceptances isn't the same as gambling on potential greats and missing.
